House Plan Tips

This “study aid” should help you identify top features of a design that are important for the way you want to have.

1. Find LEADING Door.

It’s proclaimed simply with door swings, or “Entry” “Foyer,” or even”Entry Gallery”. If leading door opens directly to the living or eating out space there’s often no notation, just the entranceway swing action. Door swings track the swing of the entranceway in and out — good to bear in mind as you think about furniture placement. Slipping doors are mentioned much less swings but as skinny lines parallel to — but thinner than — the line of the wall.

2. Mentally Walk Through The Plan.

From leading door go directly to the kitchen, living room or living room and then to the sleeping rooms. Imagine starting all the doors on the plan. Will there be a graceful easy, and effective flow between rooms and spaces?

Furniture on the program helps give scale to each space. Amenities are important but if the traffic movement is awkward the house won’t live pleasantly. Think about how precisely the kitchen links to the dining room or family room, where most people live.

3. Gauge The Garage area Entry.

Follow the road from storage area to kitchen. This is actually the way most people enter a house; blood flow should be clear and easy without small corners so to arrive with groceries or other items is really as convenient as you possibly can.

4. Note Room Dimensions.

These are usually contained in the floor plan but on Houseplans.com sometimes the measurements are outlined on the Plan Detail Web page under the tab “More Plan Information.” Compare the detailed dimensions to your own connection with comfortable room sizes. Do that by measuring the width, size, and height of 1 or two of the rooms you’re residing in now, or of rooms you prefer.

5. Smoke Out The Fireplace.

Is there room for furniture around it? I like the way the great room fire place in modern prairie style plan 48-255 is part of a wall membrane with built-in safe-keeping for media and books.

A fireplace too close to a doorway is not so useful.

6. Search for Safe-keeping.

Are the closets enough and where they need to be? Ideally, storage areas should suit the type of object being stored: coats and boots in a mudroom; large shelves for CostCo equipment, etc.,

7. Study The Stairway(s).

Will there be full level over it — creating an wide open feel — or will it just disappear into the ceiling, making a room feel small and cramped. The stair in Plan 454-14 rises in what’s, in effect, a sizable light well, brightening surrounding spaces.

8. Watch Window Placement.

Glass windows on two factors of a room balance daylight and develop a spacious feeling; home windows on just one single side of a room produce a cave-like feeling and promote glare. Windows set saturated in a wall can offer daylight while protecting privacy; however an area with these high windows, categorised as clerestories, will feel limited and boxy if it does not also have lower windows on another wall membrane for views.
