House Plan Tips

This “study help” should help you identify top features of a design that are important for how you want to reside.

1. Find LEADING Door.

It’s often designated simply with door swings, or “Entry” “Foyer,” or even”Entry Gallery”. If the front door opens right to the living or eating space there’s often no notation, just the entranceway golf swing. Door swings trace the golf swing of the door in and out — good to keep in mind as you see furniture placement. Sliding doors are known much less swings but as skinny lines parallel to — but slimmer than — the type of the wall.

2. Psychologically Walk Through THE PROGRAM.

From leading door go directly to the kitchen, living room or great room and then to the bedrooms. Imagine starting all the doorways on the plan. Is there a elegant easy, and productive flow between rooms and areas?

Furniture on the plan helps give scale to each space. Amenities are important but if the traffic circulation is awkward the house won’t live pleasantly. Think about how the kitchen links to the dining area or living room, where most people live.

3. Gauge The Storage area Entry.

Follow the road from storage to kitchen. This is actually the way most people enter into a house; flow should be clear and easy without limited corners so coming in with groceries or other items is really as convenient as is possible.

4. Note Room Proportions.

They are usually included in the floor plan but on Houseplans.com sometimes the measurements are posted on the Plan Detail Page under the tab “More Plan Information.” Compare the stated proportions to your own experience of comfortable room sizes. Do that by calculating the width, duration, and height of 1 or two of the rooms you’re living in now, or of rooms you like.

5. Smoke Out The Fire place.

Is there room for furniture around it? I like what sort of great room fireplace in modern prairie style plan 48-255 is part of your wall with built-in storage area for marketing and books.

A fireplace too near to a doorway is not so useful.

6. Search for Storage space.

Are the closets sufficient and where they need to be? Ideally, storage space areas should suit the type of subject being stored: jackets and boots in a mudroom; large racks for CostCo items, etc.,

7. Review The Stairway(s).

Is there full height over it — creating an open feel — or would it just disappear in to the ceiling, which makes a room feel small and cramped. The stair in Plan 454-14 rises in what is, in effect, a sizable light well, brightening adjoining spaces.

8. Watch Window Location.

House windows on two sides of an area balance daylight and produce a spacious feeling; glass windows on just one single side of an area produce a cave-like sense and promote glare. Glass windows set high in a wall can provide daylight while preserving privacy; however a room with these high house windows, categorised as clerestories, will feel restricted and boxy if it generally does not likewise have lower home windows on another wall for views.
